Winner Announcement: University of Ljubljana in partnership with STN Teleport, Slovenia.

Congratulations to the students and their mentors from the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, and STN.

Their dedication to this Green Teleport Program and the concepts they presented won them 1st Prize.

The Green Teleport program is a global design competition that provides WTA members with support in recruiting talent from universities and technical schools – and in driving down operating costs at the same time. It brings together university and college students with teleport operators to recommend:

• Engineering solutions that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through energy efficiency.
• Business and operational changes that reduce emissions.
• Reductions in operating costs as a result.

The competition pairs individual teleport operators with nearby universities or technical colleges that have engineering programs. Teleport staff act as advisors to student teams that research technologies and policy options, assess costs and return on investment, and make recommendations. The Green Teleport program engages students’ interest, exposes them to career opportunities, and lets companies build relationships with the most promising young engineers.

Objectives

• Create pipelines of new talent into the teleport and satellite industry through an annual competition that connects university and college students with the operations and technology staff of member teleports.
• Support existing internship programs of teleport operators or provide a foundation for developing new and effective internship programs.
• Generate cost-effective ideas for innovating in renewable energy and energy efficiency that can be implemented by teleport operators to reduce their emissions footprint while lowering operating costs.

In the first year of the Green Teleport program, teleport operators began outreach to the engineering departments of nearby universities and technical schools to offer a project to the faculty for student teams. Some operators already had internship relationships with the university, while others were starting from scratch. WTA thanks all the participating teleport operators and universities and proudly announces the winners of the 2023-24 competition.
